Atul Dodiya

In advance of his new show opening at Chemould Art gallery, I've written this piece on Atul Dodiya in Time Out.

Girish

Off topic but did you hear that our old friend Alicia Stallings was awarded a McCarthur Foundation "genius" grant yesterday?

I was *just* reading about it; incredible. Score two for Fyfield Road.

Well, I was reading a piece about genius grants, but turns out Alicia's name isn't in this piece. Will look up the list.

OK, A E Stallings she's known as now. I'd have missed it, thanks. So she's settled in Athens; I remember she had a good-looking Greek boyfriend back in the day.

Amanda Foreman got an extremely positive 9 (!) page review of her latest book in the New Yorker a few weeks ago.

We were the wrong gender, mate. That was the trouble.

First tell me why is the Time Out Mumbai website so crappy. Just left a comment on the article and it just wouldn't accept it.

Second, having just visited the Delhi, Mumbai, Paris show in Centre Pompidou, I can't agree with you more. The works were just so.. so... homogenous. They were all big, colourful and making obvious political statements: you know, the kind that no intelligent Indian can disagree with. Riots are bad, poverty is ugly, war widows are sad. I kep thinking that the artists just pick up the newspaper of the day, flip the pages until they have a aha-moment. Yes, that is suitably outrageous, and immediately start conceiving of clever ways to install it without really debating it.

Almost no works were introspective and none seem to reflect on the fact that we all - even the artists - are kind of complicit in the systems that produce these events. And that yes, we are outraged, but we also live with it on an everyday basis and benefit from it. These issues are entangled and complicated.

But of course, such complexities wouldn't be easy for a foreign audience to either get or enjoy. And I suspect that is why they don't get made or show.
